"2 Year olds do the Darnest Things"
My childhood was full of arts and crafts projects, collecting amazing rocks at the beach to make jewelry out of, Pine cone people with googly eyes, leaf print pillowcases, homemade playdough (that tasted just as bad as the real stuff) and countless other fun things that encouraged my artistic and creative side.
When I became a mother, I was excited to start instilling those same creative tendencies in my children as my mother did with my sister and I and so my house is always stocked full of construction paper, glue, finger-paints and more Popsicle sticks than we could ever possibly need - unless of course we become homeless and need to construct a 4 bedroom house out of grape stained, teeth marked little pieces of wood...
My boys - ages 12 and 7 are now moving in other directions as far as their creative outlets are going, with one pursuing drawing comic books and the other taking up photography - but my 2 year old daughter and I still spend alot of time during the day finding ways to make mini creatures and decorate the walls around the house with various paintings, coloring pages and random sticker projects. Every once in a while I will give her a pile of arts and crafts supplies and let her start her own projects while I attempt to tackle the never ending pile of dishes in the kitchen...I've come to realize, this isn't a good idea.
Yesterday, she painted a picture for me and every once in a while she would pause to say "It's beautiful mommy, is it beautiful?" or "Look!!! I made it!" and of course I would respond with a "Yes! It IS beautiful!" or a "you sure did!! Good job!" After the paint was dry, I tried to put the painting on the fridge only to get a "NO!! Its mine!! I made it!!" and had to chase her around the house to get it from her... but eventually she let me display her creativity on the food box for all to see and made sure to show everyone that walked into the house her beautiful painting.
So she's been making things and creating things and has now started declaring her ownership of said creations once she's finished them.
Well that's fine and all - except today, while I was making lunch in the kitchen, she was in the living room by herself, drawing a picture...or so I thought.
I hear "Look mom!! Its beautiful!" and I of course can't see her at the moment so I shout back "Yes sweetie!! It sure is!!" and I hear a few giggles and a "I made it!!!" and I ask her what she made and I get:
"My poop!"
My heart stopped there for a minute and I slowly walked to the living room to find my daughter - diaperless, sitting on the hardwood floors (thank goodness for hardwood floors), holding a giant "present" in her hands, turning it over and over, and giggling with delight at her "creation".
When I said "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" she got up, grabbed the dirty diaper in one hand, the "present" in the other and ran into her room screaming "NO!!! Its MINE!! I MAAAAAAADE IT!!!"
Needless to say she got a bath, I gagged alot and wished someone had been home to take a picture.
But maybe I'll just let her paint me one instead..
